Bringing a seasonal touch to your autumn wedding

March 12, 2015

Weddings which tie into the season are a great way to add some of nature's beauty into your celebrations. Whether it's a summer wedding on the beach, the classic spring wedding with an abundance of flowers or a winter wonderland wedding with the sparkle of snow, seasonal inspiration can make a ceremony or reception a stand out event.

With the turning of the leaves comes the welcome respite from the relentless Australian sun, and a boon for outdoor weddings – no bride wants their makeup melting off or their wedding party to be unbuttoning their shirts and fanning themselves with the wedding programme.

Autumn brings a crispness to the air as well as some of nature's most beautiful colours of red, orange and gold. If your wedding is coming up over the autumn months, we look at a few ways to add a little seasonal flair to your big day.

Colours of Autumn

While a bride may want to keep her wedding dress more of a traditional white or cream, that doesn't mean that her bridesmaids' or flower girl's dresses can't reflect the season.

Deeper, rich colours like plum, burgundy and chocolate brown add a touch of warmth, as well as providing a real contrast to the brightness of the bride's dress. These colours can of course be reflected in the groom's tie or pocket square.

A woodland touch

You can also incorporate autumn into the decorations and flowers in your wedding. Adding some garlands of autumn leaves or olive green and gold toned foliage to venue decorations really celebrates the season, an idea which can also extend towards the selection of autumn-hued flowers in the bridal bouquet. Flower girls can also add a sweet touch by sprinkling the aisle with gorgeous coloured autumn leaves.

Have a play around with slender branches and twigs as well as small pinecones for reception centrepieces to add a touch of whimsy to tables. Woody, spicy scented candles are also a nice touch, especially for a cooler autumn day.

Autumn photoshoot

Don't be afraid to have a little fun with it, any kids present will almost certainly be taking advantage of dancing around in the piles of red and gold leaves.

Before any of the bridal party jump into a pile of leaves in their dresses, it's always good to double check whether that colourful clearing of autumn colours in not sitting on the surface of any muddy areas which could damage floor length dresses or delicate shoes.
